Five Things To Consider When Choosing An Espresso Maker

Are you in the market for a new espresso maker?  If so, you’ve probably noticed that these machines can be very expensive.  Sure, you can buy a cheap model at your local big box store but if you want a quality unit that will last for many years, you’ll need to purchase a more “upscale” model.  But which brand do you go with?  What features should you look for?  How much do you really need to spend to get one that’s high quality?  Here are five specific things you should consider before you purchase one of these machines.

Choose Your Brand Wisely

The first thing you’ll want to consider is the brand of the espresso machine.  It’s a fact that not all of these machines are created equal.  Just like cars, televisions, cell phones, and other things we use on a daily basis, some brands are simply better than others.  Since there are so many brands out there to choose from, it’s really not practical to simply list the best brands here.  Just like other things that you buy, a good brand one year may not be the best the next.  Before you make a purchase, however, it’s a good idea to read several reviews of these machines to see which ones are currently the best.

Automatic, Semi-automatic, Or Manual

The next thing you want to consider before making a commitment on an espresso maker is how involved you want to be in the creation of your beverage.  You can either go with a full-auto unit or go to the other end of the spectrum and purchase one that is completely manual.  You can even purchase one in-between that does part of the work for you.  It’s entirely up to you.  Just keep in mind, however, that the more automation you have in a machine, the greater the possibility there is of something tearing up and needing an expensive repair.  Yes, manual models to break too but as a general rule of thumb, the more complex a mechanism is, the more likely it is to break.

How Much Are You Willing To Spend?

Yes, you can get a cheap espresso machine at your local big box store for under $100, but how long is it going to last?  Will it be something you can be proud to display in your kitchen.  Most likely you will not be pleased with the cheap products you can obtain locally.  To find a really great model you’ll have to go online.  Quality models retail for $300 and up.  Some models even go for as much as $1,000!  If you are looking for something for your kitchen for the occasional pick-me-up, a model in the $300 – $500 will do the job just fine.

Which Color Do You Prefer?

The last thing you need to consider is the exterior color of the unit you select.  Unlike other kitchen appliances, however, most espresso makers only come in two options – black or stainless steel.  Yes, there is the rare exception to this but for the most part you will only have two primary options.  Thankfully, these two options look great with just about any kitchen decor.

A Dedicated Machine Or A Combo Unit?

The last thing you want to consider is whether you want a machine that only makes espresso or if you prefer a combo unit that makes both espresso and coffee.  The combo units will take up a bit more room in your kitchen but in the long run they may be a better option since you’ll be able to get more mileage out of your machine.
